Reviewer Guidelines

Horn African Journal of Health Sciences (HAJHS)

HAJHS relies on the expertise and dedication of its reviewers to maintain the quality and integrity of the scientific record. Peer review is the independent assessment of submitted manuscripts by experts in the field, conducted prior to publication. It ensures the work's validity, rigor, and clarity.

Review Criteria

Reviewers evaluate manuscripts based on the following three core criteria:

1. Scientific Robustness

The soundness of the methodology and whether the conclusions are supported by the data. Assess if the study design is appropriate for testing the hypothesis and if the statistical analysis is correctly applied.

2. Originality

The novelty of the work and its distinction from previously published articles. Evaluate whether the manuscript presents new findings or significant advances in the field.

3. Clarity

The overall coherence and readability of the manuscript. Assess whether the writing is clear, concise, and logically organized.

Confidentiality

All submitted manuscripts must be treated as confidential documents. Reviewers must not share the manuscript or discuss its content with anyone outside the review process. If a reviewer wishes to consult a colleague on a specific aspect of the review, they must first obtain permission from the journal editor.

Competing Interests

Reviewers must disclose any competing interests that could influence their impartial assessment. These may include:

  • Financial relationships with the authors or their institutions
  • Collaborative relationships with the authors
  • Personal or professional conflicts of interest

If a competing interest exists, reviewers should recuse themselves from the review process or inform the editor immediately.

Review Timeline

Reviewers are expected to submit their reviews within the timeframe specified in the invitation. If you cannot meet the deadline, please notify the editorial office as soon as possible. Prompt reviews help ensure timely publication decisions.

What to Include in Your Review:

  • A brief summary of the manuscript and its main findings
  • Major concerns that need to be addressed
  • Minor revisions or suggestions for improvement
  • Specific recommendations (accept, minor revision, major revision, reject)
  • Confidential comments to the editor (if any)
